Carl Chapman’s Report on the East Texas Dual Sport Ride, January 26 & 27, 2008 with the folks from “Two Wheeled Texans” motorcycle forum.

BMW-Club-of-Houston > Now if we could have only combined the 2 rides. Klaus’ East Texas Ride’s weather and road conditions with the bikes on the ride I did. What a big mess, but a lot of fun. I can say that now that the ride is over.

BMW-Club-of-Houston > We all knew what we were getting into with all the rain that whole week and still about 30-35 riders showed up.

BMW-Club-of-Houston > Saturday was damp and cold all day long and of course the roads were sloppy and just got worse with ruts as the ride progressed. With this many riders, we broke into several groups to attack the ride. When we came to a big mud bog, we waited until the rider in front of us cleared the section because basically you had little control. You literally went with the flow and that could cover the entire road. Momentum, but not speed, was your friend.

BMW-Club-of-Houston > Just keep on the gas for hopefully forward propulsion and constantly work the handlebar for direction and balance. Amazingly, I made it thru Saturday without a fall, but was still covered with mud.

BMW-Club-of-Houston > Sunday started the same as Saturday, cold and damp with the sun finally making an appearance about noon. Riders started warming up and the roads started to dry up a little, but there was just too much mud and muck to avoid.

BMW-Club-of-Houston > I started the day with one group of 7 riders and we had a lot of fun, but shifted to another group of 3 riders for the afternoon. What a difference, these guys really picked up the pace. I think we rode faster off road than on road. It was exhilaration and felt good to push yourself in these conditions.

BMW-Club-of-Houston > Crossing one of those back country bridges, you always wonder what would happen if your wheels dropped between the rails. And yes the guy went over the side. He was cold and wet but not hurt.

BMW-Club-of-Houston > I went into this ride knowing 1 or 2 people and came away with more friends than I can remember their names, just their faces and bikes. All in all, a real weekend workout, but we all came away with smiles and great memories and a lot of mud. Thanks to the TWT members for making this happen.
